This is a post about the people’s love for clicking & sharing selfies for the #IndiSpire214 ideas from indiblogger.
Felt the topic was very important in these days with Selfie culture, and hence here are my personal thoughts.
In olden days the Romans built the Arena for proudly displaying their sports. As days went by, it became very usual for few teams to play and one to win. This made the crowds to lose interest, and the spectators count decreased. Kings thought about possible solution, and in order to raise the interest, they kept improving the sports with more tougher and toughest competitions.
They replaced it with a real fights. Even with the regular fights they lost interest slowly, and was in want of more entertainment. The crazy for such entertainment led them to have the Colosseum and the fighter’s fought the horrible fights. And the extreme was to have the unseen fights like the throwing the men to the animals and enjoy the way they fight and lose their life. In the end the blood thirsty people started liking this.
This is a classic example of how a normal sports activity ended up with blood thirsty game all in the name of more entertainment.
Sounds familiar? Yes. In my opinion, if we replace the above Sports culture with the Selfie culture of today, this is exactly what is happening.
What is a selfie and why it is different than the passport photos?
Well, a passport photo is more like the official picture of yourself in the most elegant way you can represent yourselves. But the Selfie is the most bizarre poses you can make to make an impression to your friends and viewers.
Everyone using the social media does end up posting their selfies. So, who gets the maximum attentions?
Mostly the one with most followers. In other words, the one who has better reach to the outside world. So, how do you get that reach? Well, this is the tricky portion. You need to be creative, and regular in posting n the Social media.
Creativity obviously depends on the person who is involved. For some, it could as simple as playing with a cute dog on a plain, to posting a selfie with a famous celebrity, to someone taking a selfie from the tallest building with the dangerous pose.
In fact there were someone who tried to take selfies taking from atop of a train only to find himself killed due to the high voltage line on top of the train. His own eager for creativity ended his life.
Why do people risk lives for a like?
Wishing to get more likes do not harm you, but the fact that you attend for something stupidity to earn those likes is what being ridiculed by all. Inspire of all these warning, which the people do know, are still crazy of such activity. Why?
Its the easiest path to get famous – in the digital world. Getting an easy fame makes them addicted to the social media and they start thinking life is so easy. And when they face even a slightest fall they get physiologically affected. Some even end up taking extreme steps.
So, what is secret that makes people to love taking selfies?
To admire themselves? Some even claim that it improves their self-confidence. But I feel, its definitely not just to admire themselves, for they can do it just in front of the Mirror. Anyway, don’t they do it everyday?
Its more than admiring oneself. Shows more about the admiration that they crave to get from “other” digital souls. And no one cares who are these others. It could be anyone in their own family, less risk. But it could also be any passer-by through their posts or even paedophiles. All they need is a like, an admiration, a praise, some positive comments etc and all positives you can think of.
On the bottom line it is nothing more about seeking attentions syndrome. Since we discussed about this in previous posts, I do not want to get into the details again.
These selfie lovers, enjoy the instant-fame and the notional happiness from the likes & comments they get from the digital world, without knowing that this is just a mirage – as good as optical illusion.
Not just that, people take tons of pictures until they are satisfied with the picture. They are satisfied once they feel its perfect. But when their definition of perfect does not fit the real picture it only increases their pressure and stress. This leads to unnecessary illness and in the wrong run more psychological problems.
So, I feel its our own responsibility to create awareness of such issues to our younger generations. Not easy, especially for the cat that has tasted the Milk. But we have no options, its our own people.
No one says to stop the habit, it could still be a good way to find some fun. But we should know the limits, and where to stop. If you want to be happy with the likes you get in your posts, you should live long to enjoy that. To live long, you should be wise enough to know what is the limit beyond which you should not take your creativity.
Be responsible, when you click.
